What kind of district Almere Stad is
Almere Stad is home to the centre of Almere, with Almere Centrum station, the city hall, most of the shops and the Weerwater lake. Around that centre lie residential neighbourhoods, each with its own name and its own building period. Most were built in the 1980s and 1990s, although Tussen de Vaarten, the Literatuurwijk and Noorderplassen also have many newer homes.
As in the rest of Almere, cyclists have their own paths and buses their own lanes, separate from the roads for cars. If you work in Amsterdam or Utrecht, you will often have a station within cycling distance in Almere Stad. Besides Almere Centrum, there are Almere Muziekwijk and Almere Parkwijk. From Almere Centrum, intercity trains run without a change to Amsterdam, Schiphol, Utrecht and Zwolle.
If you are coming from Amsterdam, bear in mind that the centre of Almere is modern and has no historic old town. If small-scale streets are what you are after, you will probably feel more at home in Almere Haven.
